Railways in Ireland

Many of our visitors ask questions about the future of railways in Ireland and possible development of the rail network. It is always interesting to hear these discussions while surrounded by miniature trains and railway scenery at Sligo Miniature World.
In our opinion, passenger rail definitely has a future in Ireland, especially between larger towns and cities. Faster and more frequent services, improved reliability, partial electrification and shorter journey times can encourage more people to choose trains instead of cars, helping to reduce road traffic and improve connectivity across the country.
When it comes to freight transport, the situation is more complex. In Ireland, rail freight is most practical for large quantities of the same goods or oversized cargo. Road transport remains far more flexible for general deliveries, so large-scale restoration of freight rail is unlikely unless connected to major industrial or port activity.
Regarding the railway network itself, developments such as the Western Rail Corridor and shorter links to existing infrastructure are possible in the future. However, major expansion of entirely new railway lines may be less likely than improving what already exists. Adding second tracks on busy sections could significantly increase railway capacity and efficiency.
One thing is certain - people still care deeply about railways, and we hear that passion from visitors every week.
Follow the journey.
