Meet Smokey Joe

Every layout has its characters - and at Sligo Miniature World, one of the most recognised is Smokey Joe. This compact engine, produced by Hornby, is based on an industrial steam locomotive, built for short-distance work in yards, docks, and factories rather than long mainline journeys.
Smokey Joe has been part of the exhibition for quite some time and has become a familiar sight to returning visitors. Despite its small size, it stands out immediately and is often one of the first trains people notice when watching the layout. For younger visitors especially, it has become a favourite. Many can be seen chasing it as it moves through the scene, waiting for it to reappear as it makes its way around. It’s the kind of engine that visitors quickly pick out and keep watching.
It is also a good example of how even the smallest engines play an important role in the overall display. Not everything is about size or speed - sometimes it is the character that captures attention. And Smokey Joe continues to do exactly that.
Follow the journey.
